Gender marking

Nominal gender is lexical, but exists an agreement of verbs with intrinsic gender of nouns.
  • Masculine singular is unmarked:
Bótso ja.
[wolf MASC-go]
[bót͡so ɟa]
The wolf is going.

Tháme púlam moól.
[man water-ACC MASC-drink]
[tʰáme púlam móːl]
The man drinks water.

  • Masculine plural is marked with prefix b(a)-:
Bótsod bajá.
[wolf-PL MASC.PL-go]
[bót͡sod baɟá]
These wolves are going.

Thámed púlam bamoól.
[man-PL water-ACC MASC.PL-drink]
[tʰámed púlam bamóːl]
The people drink the water.

  • Feminine singular is marked with prefix i(a)-:
Bótso ijá.
[wolf FEM-go]
[bót͡so iɟá]
She-wolf is going.

Pul thámer imoólag.
[water man-DAT FEM-drink-PASS]
[pul tʰámer imóːlag]
The water is drunk by the man.

  • Feminine plural is marked with prefix r(a)-:
Bótsod rajá.
[wolf-PL FEM.PL-go]
[bót͡sod raɟá]
She-wolves are going

Cónkhid dzálad radujá.
[girl-PL woman-PL FEM.PL-be-INCH]
[cónkʰid d͡zálad raduɟá]
Girls become women.
